Mitchell Davis is interested in cycles of damage and repair. He uses textiles and assemblage to investigate themes of contemporary masculinity, fatherhood, and identity through a re-contextualisation of found objects. His practice investigates the inherent value of sentimental and salvaged materials by emphasizing their flaws and embedded histories as metaphors for human and personal imperfections.
Davis examines the act of reworking and recontextualising these materials through the processes of sewing, welding, and casting, considering the use of these processes as a means of engaging with personal memories and past experiences. Expanding his practice through installation, spaces are created where past experiences are revisited, allowing for a clearer understanding and appreciation of self-identity in the present moment. Ultimately, this project reflects on how making art can become a confessional practice, revealing personal narratives through the alchemical transformation of both materials and self.
